Youth Ministry in Waiapu

In Waiapu we are committed to encouraging young people in their faith and knowledge of God, building leadership and life skills and knowing that they are valued members of the Diocese of Waiapu and the wider Anglican Church.

We are a ‘Safe Here’ Diocese and plan our youth events with the safety and protection of our young people in mind.  Our ‘Safe Here’ co-ordinator can be contacted via email at:

Youth ministry in Waiapu happens in a variety of ways.  First and foremost we believe young people should be nurtured in faith by their own parish family.

There are many other ways youth ministry happens in Waiapu to, some of which are listed below:

L T 4 Youth  -  Leadership Training For Youth

LT4Youth is all about “Raising confident young people who are committed to faith, service and leadership”.

We were excited to launch LT4Youth at our Waiapu Synod in September 2012.  Young people 14 years and older are able to join.

LT4Youth is for young people in the Anglican Diocese of Waiapu who are prepared to be self-motivated, committed to their local church and have a desire to grow in faith and develop service and leadership skills.

What’s involved?  There are 5 modules to complete over 2 years, all based on the 5 Marks of Mission endorsed by the General Synod/te Hinota Whanui of the Anglican Church.

  • Telling Our Story
  • Faith Formation
  • Serving Others
  • Social Justice
  • Care of Creation

Young people are supported by their local church and a mentor. There are camps and workshops to attend based on each of the 5 modules, and tasks to achieve in both the parish and community. When all 5 modules are completed and signed off, participants will be eligible to receive the 'Bishop of Waiapu Award’.

            Youth Synod

Youth Synod runs alongside Diocesan Synod and is an opportunity for young people to have a ‘voice’.
Every parish is encouraged to send youth representatives to discuss and debate issues relevant to them, the church and wider community. Regional Youth Synod reps put relevant motions to Diocesan Synod.

                              Top Parish

This is our big annual Waiapu Youth event held in March!  Young people gather from all over Waiapu - from as far away as Tolaga Bay on the East Coast, Weber in Southern Hawkes Bay, Turangi, Taupo, Opotiki and beyond!  This is the weekend we go into battle for the Top Parish trophies as parish teams compete in games all day Saturday and that night at ‘Waiapu’s Got Talent’ .  Then there is also the competition to see who will win the votes to be the ‘Bishop For the Day’.  On Sunday we all come together for some amazing worship followed by the Prize Giving.  This is a weekend not to be missed!

Anglicans@Parachute:  Waiapu loves being part of the Anglican Base camp at Parachute Festival.  Every year we contribute by setting up the base camp and helping to feed hungry campers.  Of course there is also the fabulous music and the mystique of being among 25,000 other people at this annual Christian music festival.  Join us on the bus to Parachute next year.
